This is a one-to-one mentoring service that pairs an adult volunteer (Big) with a child (Little) in need of additional time, support and attention. Community based matches are asked to sign on for at least one year and agree to spend a minimum of four hours a month with their Little.
TOPs (Teens Offering Partnerships)
This is our very successful school based mentoring program. We are partnered with both the Lawrence and Morgan County Boards of Education. In this program, high school sophomores, juniors and seniors are paired with elementary school aged children. The Bigs spend about an hour a week, during school hours, with their Littles. The Bigs help their Littles with social and academic issues and it gives them a chance to give back to their community.
Children of Prisoners
This is our newest endeavor at Big Brothers Big Sisters. The program focuses on mentoring children of incarcerated parents. Senate studies have shown that 7 out of 10 children who have a parent (or parents) that are incarcerated will end up incarcerated themselves. Our goal is to try to break this "generational crime cycle". We are looking for churches and people of faith to mentor these special children. No contact is required between the Big and the incarcerated parent. We deal strictly with guardians and custodial parents. This program is in conjunction with the State of Alabama Children's Trust Fund and Volunteers of America.
